WHAT TO EXPECT
Ashtanga is a set sequence of postures that is energetic and synchronises breath with movements.
The class will begin with a quiet period to focus on your breathing, followed by Sun Salutations, Standing Postures, and Seated Postures. There will then be time at the end for a blissful relaxation. The focus is on synchronising breath and movement – which becomes a moving meditation as you become more familiar with the sequence.
If you join us for an Ashtanga Yoga class you will gain strength and flexibility, and greater body awareness. This class is also an opportunity to focus inward, away from everyday distractions.
IS THIS CLASS FOR ME?
You don’t need prior yoga experience; however, you do need a level of fitness. There are no rest periods throughout the class, but if you are prepared to sweat and work hard then this is for you! It is a fast-paced class, so you must listen to the instructions. Please note: this class is not suitable for anyone who is pregnant.
“If you are after a slow relaxing class this is not for you! Be prepared to work hard, although modifications are given along the way.” Katharine Lawrence – Yoga (Ashtanga) Tutor
HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR CLASS
You should wear anything that you feel comfortable to move in and that is non-restrictive e.g. leggings, tracksuit bottoms or workout gear. You should also try to wear layers, as the nature of the practice creates heat in the body and being able to remove some clothing will prevent you from getting too hot. You will need a non-slip yoga mat and should be bare foot throughout the class. You may wish to have a jumper or a blanket for the relaxation at the end of the class.
Make sure you have water to hand, it’s important to stay hydrated.
Before you take part in a class, please make sure you read our Safe Practice at Home Checklist, click here to download now.
You will have access to the full term of classes until Monday 4 January, 2021.
